Wyoming officials have warned residents about identity theft schemes targeting unemployment insurance and workers’ compensation benefits. According to the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services, fraudsters have used deceptive text messages and other communications to steal personal information and compromise benefit accounts.

The scam often begins with a message that appears to come from a trusted source. Recipients may be asked to click a link, verify account details, or provide sensitive information such as Social Security numbers, bank account information, PINs, or passwords. Once fraudsters obtain that information, they can attempt to file fraudulent claims, redirect payments, or alter account details before the legitimate claimant notices anything is wrong.

In benefit programs, stolen identity data can be especially damaging because the information may already include enough detail to pass basic verification checks. A fraudster does not need to invent a person when they can impersonate a real one. That makes account monitoring and contact-information validation critical, especially when payments are delivered digitally.

Wyoming’s unemployment insurance program uses multiple safeguards, including Social Security Administration verification, non-citizen status checks through Homeland Security, eligibility reviews, wage matching, and employer verification. But officials continue to caution residents that scammers often target individuals directly, bypassing agency systems by tricking people into revealing their own information.

The fraud is difficult to detect when account changes appear to come from the rightful claimant. A new phone number, email address, bank account, or mailing address may seem routine unless agencies can identify suspicious timing, device behavior, or mismatched identity signals.

“Fraudsters count on speed and confusion,” officials warned. “A single click can give criminals the information they need to access benefits that do not belong to them.”

The case underscores the need for layered identity verification, account change monitoring, and real-time fraud alerts that can help agencies distinguish legitimate updates from identity theft attempts.
